Special Needs Dentistry – You Can Do It! is a free continuing education course to help dental professionals realize they can see most individuals with special health care needs (ISHCN) without a tremendous change to their existing practices. Dr. Matthew Cooke, a pediatric dentist, dental anesthesiologist, and Director of Healthy Athletes, Special Olympics of VA and PA, will present interactive case-based discussions covering several topics related to the dental care of ISHCN, including multiple commonly seen conditions with orofacial implications, risk vs. benefit, and behavioral guidance options within a dental office setting. Kami A. Piscitelli, RDH, VA Department of Health Special Needs Oral Health Coordinator, will provide a brief presentation regarding special health care needs, disability etiquette, and hygiene adaptations for people with home care challenges. Teaching methods include lecture, demonstrations, and audience engagement. All dental office staff members are invited and encouraged to attend! The speakers have no relevant financial relationships to disclose. No prior skill level or knowledge is required.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify at least one common chronic condition or disability and a potential orofacial implication linked to that condition.
  2. Identify at least one reason for determining risk-versus-benefit while treatment planning for ISCHN.
  3. Identify at least one possible dental hygiene tool modification for some ISHCN.
